Motoring Extravaganza

A Brief Account of our Motoring Extravaganza or Joe's idea of brief !!

As most of you know in July Joe & myself did a trip to Italy, taking in the Stelvio Pass the second highest pass in the Alps & the Nurburgring race track in Germany on the return trip.    Although not an MG run, out of 13 cars that came with us 7 were indeed MG's, we have wanted to do this trip for some years & after watching Top gear when they did Stelvio some years ago we said right lets start planning.  We invited friends we know with interesting cars, the only rule was no 4 door saloons. This is a short report ( so says Joe) as both of us find computers very boring (after writting this if I never see a computer again it will be to soon)

We left Calais on Tuesday morning & motored (mostly in pouring rain) to our 1st overnight in Strasbourg, the old city is fantastic & we will go back for a weekend one day.  Day 2: In more rain & 370 miles & after 2 passes we arrived in Livigno (some of us had a more eventful trip) The Hotel Galli being our base for 3 nights. Day 3: We motored down to Bormio in more heavy rain, up the eastern side of The Stelvio Pass the road is wider this side, with some 30 plus hairpins, but easier to overtake a slower vehicle, then after some refreshment down the other side much tighter & 48 hairpins. Day 4: Was a rest day & for once quite good weather, a trip up in the cablecar for lunch & a bit of retail therapy did us all good. Day 5: Was a long day 400 miles, & with the first 75 being mountain passes this stretch will always take 2.5 hours or more,(that's without cows on the road!!) we knew this day would take the best part of 9 hours, but with cows, road works & getting lost in Austria (don't even think about asking) it took nearly 11, but the Sonne Hotel made it worth the effort. Day 5: Was what Joe had been waiting for, our visit ti the Nurburgring or (the green hell) as Jackie Stewart prefered to call it , 13 miles of twisting race track with blind bends & brows, it rises & falls 1000 ft in 1 lap, well they do say it's good for you to scare yourself at least once a day, Joe thinks in that case he can now take the rest of the year off. It certainly is a scarey place, I was doing joe said over 100 MPH 5500 RPM in 4th gear, I'll take his word beccause I had no time to look at the rev counter,3 Porches & the ring taxi came past as if we were standing still, A wonderful sight & you could smell the red hot brakes, after lots of discussion about the laps by everyone present we went back to the Hotel Day 6: Was spent taking a leisurely drive through some wonderful countryside to Luxembourg another good Hotel the St Hubert. Day 7: A fairly leisurely drive back to Calais through Belgium.

We have decided we are going back to the Nurburgring in 2013 7 will stay in the Sonne Hotel again (maybe even go to the German GP.

joe & I would like to thank all of you who were on the trip & helped to make it extra memorable. Thank you.

We did a warts & all DVD of the trip, if anyone wants to have a look , please ask,

Marie has said she will put some photo's on later, as she was the official photographer, (if she didn't know before she does now)

Great report Mary (and Joe) and I think we all have excellent memories of a really good Motoring Extravaganza. It was a superb choice of hotel in Livigno and the really nice bunch of people made this a super holiday which, of course, was no surprise to anyone as it was organised by Rookies Tours!
Val and I would like to thank you both for the enormous amount of effort you put into making the trip such a huge success and arranging for The Stig and Clarkson to be on the Stelvio Pass to see us all through was pure genius.

Mary & Joe, that is a very excellent report although a bit short!! lol
We shall be joining you on your trip in 2013 so put our names on the sheet please.
I will of course put some pictures on, but i will add them to the Photo Gallery, as then i can add and edit them and keep this area to the comments! if that's ok?

I will make a copy of the photos for everyone on the trip, although after counting up how many i have (around 1000!) they may have to go on more than one! oh don't worry i won't be putting that many on your cd's!

Lastly Buster & I would of course like to thank Joe and Mary for the best holiday we have ever had and will not stop talking about for the next 30+ years :D
